The first and most important problem at home is a clogged drain which can be cleaned very easily. After removing and cleaning the stopper, pour some hot water in the drain to unclog it. Tools like plunger and Auger may be helpful in this regard. If all these procedures fail to produce the desired result the next step will be to use a chemical cleaner. If still the clogging is there you will have to call a plumber.
Because of excessive usage the caulking between the fixtures such as sink and tubs is liable to crack or pulls loose. First gather the things that are needed such as putty knife, strong household cleaner, clean rags, chlorine bleach, scissors, silicone or bath caulk and scissors. With the help of the putty knife remove all the old caulk from the joint and clean the joint with the strong household cleaner. If the joint has not been cleaned properly, use mild bleach for it. Dry it with the help of a rag when you are done. Apply silicone caulk to the joint. If you have a number of joints start working with the smallest joint first. After applying the caulk leave it to dry for several hours. Water should not be allowed to come in contact with the caulk while drying.
If a seal under the toilet gets damaged, you can replace it very easily without calling a plumber. The seal on the bottom of the toilet, is a gasket made of a ring of wax. You can buy a replacement at a hardware store. This seal helps in preventing damage to the flooring. Once you have bought a seal, wear the rubber gloves and shut off the water supply. Flush the toilet several times to remove any material in the tank and bowl. Then dry it further with the help of a sponge. Remove the old seal and caulk carefully lest you damage the whole system. Now unwrap the new seal and place it over the flange on the floor. Place the toilet and the bowl over the seal and keep it leveled. Sitting on the toilet may help in leveling it. Place the nuts and bolts that you have removed earlier and connect it to the water supply. Check for any leaks in the toilet by flushing in water. If no leaks are found apply the caulk between the toilet and the floor.
Hope these plumbing tips will help you fix some common problems.
